The Exmoor Pony Herd 428 "FINCHCROFT" Exmoor Ponies

Who are we?

We are Jackie and Sam Wharton. We currently own 20 Exmoors. Our herd is based near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Our herd number is 428 and our registered prefix (for our foals born in 2013 and onwards) is Finchcroft.

Why Exmoors?

In October 1999 I registered for a freshers week trek with the Royal (Dick) veterinary college herd (http://www.exmoorponytrekking.co.uk/). I had no idea that this was to be a life changing moment! I remember heading up the hill to meet a herd of very similar looking brown ponies and falling in love a first sight with those mealy muzzles and appealing eyes.

I had a fabulous first trek and decided to register on the instructors course. Over the coming weeks I soon realised that those similar looking brown ponies were all very much individual characters and all wonderful animals to be involved with. The joys of seeing a herd of a dozen or so exmoors running together is something very special and it didn't take long for these magical animals to steal my heart. I looked forward to wednesday afternoons with the ponies and soon found myself spending more and more weekends out on the Pentlands.

It was the foot and mouth outbreak that was the real turning point. With no trekking allowed, the ponies all had to find somewhere to go for the summer and I took two of the ponies (Bazil and Ptarmigan) home with me. I had a fabulous summer and I realised that I would never like to be without an exmoor in my life. The boys were fantastic and we had great fun all summer long.

It was the year after that I met Becks and he became my first pony. He is fabulous, speedy, cheeky and fun and never fails to put a smile on my face! In the same year I met my husband Sam.

Since then our herd has steadily been increasing and we had our first foal in 2006 which marked the beginning of a new era and we have now had 17 registered foals. I am glad that I have them and wouldn't change them for the world.
